PART 6 – Daniel Claimed He Wanted to Tell the Truth, but His Warning Raised a More Dangerous Question About Who Had Been Watching Emily

Emily did not reply to Daniel.

She showed me the messages instead.

There were four.

The first repeated that he knew about the properties.

The second said Richard had hidden something from both of us.

The third warned that someone else was looking for the same documents.

The fourth contained an address.

No explanation.

Just an address.

Samuel read the messages twice.

“Do not go there.”

Emily nodded.

“I wasn't planning to.”

But she kept staring at the screen.

“You believe him?”

“No.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then why are you worried?”

She looked at me.

“Because Daniel shouldn't know about the properties.”

That was the problem.

The existence of the properties had been buried in a private estate document.

Richard knew.

The executor knew.

Emily's grandmother knew.

Daniel should never have seen those papers.

Unless Richard had shown them to him.

Or unless Daniel had been involved much more deeply than the financial records had yet established.

Samuel contacted the investigators.

They confirmed that Daniel had not disclosed any separate property holdings during questioning.

That did not prove he was lying.

It only meant there was another gap.

The next morning, investigators searched several Mercer-controlled storage units.

One was empty.

Another contained company records.

The third held something unexpected.

A locked metal cabinet.

Inside were copies of Emily's grandmother's estate documents.

There were also photographs.

Emily at seventeen.

Emily at twenty-one.

Emily leaving work.

Emily entering her apartment.

Emily meeting Daniel.

Some photographs were recent.

Some were years old.

The investigators immediately treated them as evidence.

Emily stared at the photographs in silence.

“Why was someone following me?”

Nobody answered.

Samuel contacted the investigator assigned to the case.

“What do you think?”

“We're looking into it.”

“Was Richard involved?”

“We can't say yet.”

Emily picked up one photograph.

It showed her standing outside a grocery store.

She was laughing at something on her phone.

The picture had been taken from across the street.

“I didn't know anyone was watching me.”

I put my hand on her shoulder.

“You weren't supposed to.”

That evening, the investigator called.

A fingerprint had been recovered from one of the photographs.

It belonged to Daniel.

Emily sat down.

“Why would he keep these?”

“We don't know.”

“Did he take them?”

“Some appear to have been printed from digital files.”

“Then who took the pictures?”

“We're tracing the source.”

The investigator paused.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“Your brother-in-law's company hired a private investigator two years ago.”

Emily frowned.

“I don't have a brother-in-law.”

“You did have someone acting in that capacity.”

“Who?”

“Daniel.”

I felt a chill.

He had hired someone to monitor Emily.

Not after the investigation.

Before.

The timing mattered.

The private investigator's invoices showed surveillance beginning shortly after Emily's twenty-seventh birthday.

That was two years before the bruises.

Two years before the trust withdrawals accelerated.

Two years before Daniel proposed to me.

Emily stared at the dates.

“He was watching me before he even met Claire.”

I nodded.

That was the part I could not get past.

Our relationship had begun afterward.

Which meant Daniel's interest in me might not have been entirely separate from his family's plans.

I refused to jump to conclusions.

But I could not ignore the possibility.

Samuel suggested we examine the earliest messages between Daniel and Richard.

The investigators already had copies.

They showed something disturbing.

Richard had asked Daniel to find out whether Emily had begun asking questions about the estate.

Daniel had replied that he would handle it.

Then, months later, he had mentioned me.

She works in compliance.

That line appeared in one message.

Richard's response was immediate.

Then make sure she stays on our side.

Emily read it twice.

“You knew what I did.”

“I told you about my job.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn't know what my job involved.”

She shook her head.

“So they wanted me close to you because I might notice the money.”

“That seems likely.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Was anything between us real?”

I did not answer immediately.

“I don't know.”

That was the hardest sentence I had ever spoken to her.

Because Daniel had been the man I loved.

But there was another version of him in those messages.

A version who calculated.

A version who watched.

A version who treated people as problems to be managed.

Two days later, Daniel requested another meeting.

The investigators agreed, provided it took place under controlled conditions.

Emily refused to attend.

I went instead.

Daniel looked thinner.

His hair was unkempt.

For the first time since I had met him, he looked ordinary.

Not powerful.

Not charming.

Just tired.

He sat across from me.

“You know about the properties.”

“Yes.”

“You know Dad wanted them.”

“Yes.”

“He would have destroyed Emily to get them.”

“You helped him.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“Why?”

He was silent.

Then he said, “Because I thought I could stop it.”

I almost laughed.

“You helped him steal hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

“I thought if I cooperated, I could keep him from doing worse.”

“You were the one who told Emily to sign.”

“I was afraid.”

“You were afraid of your father.”

“Yes.”

“And Emily was supposed to pay for your fear?”

His face tightened.

“No.”

“But she did.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I didn't plan to hurt you.”

“That doesn't answer the question.”

“I didn't know Dad would use you.”

“What did he want from me?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Information.”

“About what?”

“Your work. Your contacts. Whether you could trace money.”

I stared at him.

“Did you ask me those questions?”

“Yes.”

I remembered all the evenings when he had asked about my cases.

All the casual questions.

All the jokes about how I could probably find money hidden anywhere.

At the time, I had thought he was interested in my work.

Now I wondered whether he had been collecting information.

Daniel looked at me.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe.”

He closed his eyes.

“I did.”

“But you also used me.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

The admission was quiet.

It was almost a relief.

I stood.

“There's nothing left for us.”

“I know.”

Before I left, he said my name.

I turned.

“Dad wasn't the only one involved.”

My hand tightened around the door handle.

“What do you mean?”

“There was someone helping him.”

“Who?”

“I don't know the whole name.”

“Daniel.”

He looked terrified.

“The person who helped him set up the offshore accounts.”

“Who?”

“Evelyn.”

I frowned.

“Who is Evelyn?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I never met her.”

“Then how do you know her name?”

“Because Dad was afraid of her.”

That was the last thing he said.

I left the room with one new name and a feeling I could not shake.

Evelyn.

The name did not appear in the trust records.

It did not appear in the company accounts.

It did not appear in the investigators' current file.

But Daniel had said one thing that mattered.

Richard was afraid of her.

And for the first time since the investigation began, I wondered whether the Mercer family had not been the center of the scheme at all.

Maybe they had only been one part of it.
