“What does that mean?”

“It means I have a job now. It isn’t perfect, but it’s dependable. The new position would be full-time and better paid, but it would also be more responsibility.”

“You’d be good at it.”

“That is not the only question.”

“What’s the other question?”

She looked at me for a long time.

“Whether I want my old dream back because I still love it, or because I want to prove the past wrong.”

I had no quick answer.

That was becoming a problem lately.

Mom had begun asking questions that could not be solved like math.

A week passed.

Then another.

She talked to Evelyn.

She talked to Dr. Walsh.

She talked to two former reading-room families.

I added one under GOOD.

I took a picture.

“No.”

“My eyes were closed.”

I liked that answer.

Years later, I would understand how important the difference was.

One rainy morning, I thought I had ruined my future by stopping.

“I believe the rain caused the trouble.”

“You caused some.”

“Possibly.”

She watched the robot spin once more.

I did.

Of course I did.

Maybe I would have arrived on time.

Maybe Mom would never have opened that old box.

Maybe Evelyn’s letter would still be sitting unread.

There was no way to know.

“I think about it sometimes.”

“And?”

I placed the robot back at the starting line.
