Julian left Evelyn's condominium without saying goodbye.
He drove in silence.
Mariana sat beside him.
Neither of them spoke until they reached the office.
Julian went directly to Arthur's conference room.
"Pull every document from the year before the collapse."
Arthur looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because my mother just admitted she gave Richard Hale confidential information about my company."
Arthur's expression changed.
"Are you sure?"
"She said it herself."
Arthur stood.
"How much did she know?"
"Everything."
Within an hour, the conference table was covered with old files.
Contracts.
Cash-flow reports.
Loan applications.
Client communications.
Julian read them with a concentration Mariana had not seen in years.
The company crisis had begun with the loss of a major client.
But there were other irregularities.
A lender had unexpectedly changed its terms.
A supplier had demanded immediate payment.
A competitor had made an offer to acquire one of Julian's most profitable distribution contracts.
At the time, each event had seemed separate.
Now they looked connected.
Arthur found something.
"This email."
Julian leaned closer.
It had been sent from an anonymous address to one of the company's suppliers.
The message contained confidential information about Julian's financial position.
Arthur checked the timestamp.
"Three days before the supplier changed terms."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"Who received it?"
"The supplier."
"Who sent it?"
"Can't tell from the original archive."
Mariana looked at the screen.
"Can you recover the metadata?"
Arthur nodded.
"Maybe."
He worked for several minutes.
Then he stopped.
"The address was routed through a private server."
"Whose?"
"Richard Hale's old company."
Julian sat back.
The room was silent.
Richard had known about the weakness.
He had exploited it.
And Evelyn had supplied the information.
Mariana reached for Julian's hand.
He let her.
"This doesn't mean she caused everything," Arthur said carefully.
Julian nodded.
"I know."
"But it means we need evidence before accusing anyone."
"I want evidence."
Arthur continued searching.
They discovered that Richard's company had purchased debt connected to one of Julian's suppliers shortly before the crisis.
He had positioned himself to profit if Julian failed.
The plan was simple.
Pressure the company.
Wait for the valuation to fall.
Acquire the distressed assets.
Then obtain the land through Mariana.
Julian stared at the documents.
It had been a coordinated strategy.
The only missing piece was proof that Richard had directed it.
Arthur found the proof two days later.
A former employee had preserved old correspondence on a personal drive.
Among the files was a message from Richard.
The message referred to Julian by name.
It described his company as vulnerable.
It instructed an associate to "keep pressure on the supplier."
Another line referred to Mariana's property.
If the husband survives, the land remains the easier route.
Julian read the sentence three times.
Mariana's face went pale.
"He wanted the land even if your company survived."
Arthur nodded.
"Yes."
Julian leaned back.
"Why?"
"Because the land is worth more now."
Mariana looked at the map.
"And because he believed I would eventually sell."
Arthur said nothing.
She understood.
Richard had assumed she would be pressured.
Perhaps by debt.
Perhaps by family.
Perhaps by circumstance.
But he had not counted on her grandmother's will surviving.
He had not counted on Daniel keeping records.
And he certainly had not counted on Mariana discovering the truth.
Julian asked, "Where is Richard now?"
Arthur answered.
"Still operating."
"Then we need to know what he is doing with the property around mine."
Arthur nodded.
They investigated.
Richard had begun clearing land near the rural estate.
Construction permits had been filed.
Road improvements had been requested.
A development proposal was pending.
The final parcel was still missing.
Mariana's parcel.
Without it, the project could not proceed as planned.
Julian looked at his wife.
"He'll come after you."
"I know."
"Then we need protection."
Mariana shook her head.
"Not fear."
Julian understood.
"Documentation."
"Exactly."
They hired independent counsel.
They secured the original trust records.
They notified the county of the disputed historical transfers.
They placed every relevant document into a secure archive.
For the first time, Mariana was not reacting to pressure.
She was building a record.
Richard made his move three weeks later.
A letter arrived at the estate.
It offered Mariana a substantial amount for the land.
She read it without expression.
Julian stood across the table.
"That's more than the property was worth when your grandmother died."
"It's still less than it's worth now."
He raised an eyebrow.
"You checked?"
"I have an architect's brain, remember?"
He smiled.
"Right."
She continued reading.
The letter contained a deadline.
Thirty days.
Mariana placed it on the table.
"He thinks I'm afraid."
Julian looked at her.
"Are you?"
"Yes."
He nodded.
"Good."
She looked surprised.
"Why?"
"Because fear means we're taking the situation seriously."
Mariana smiled faintly.
"You've changed."
"I hope so."
The next letter was less polite.
Then came a phone call.
Then an unexpected visit from one of Richard's representatives.
The man arrived at the studio wearing an expensive suit.
"Mrs. Vance, Mr. Hale would like to resolve this privately."
Mariana didn't invite him to sit.
"I'm not interested."
"He is prepared to increase the offer."
"No."
"You should consider the development implications."
"I have."
The representative lowered his voice.
"Your property will eventually be surrounded."
Mariana looked directly at him.
"Then I suppose I'll have neighbors."
The man smiled thinly.
"You may find the process unpleasant."
Julian stepped into the room.
"You may find the next conversation even less pleasant."
The representative looked at him.
"Mr. Vance."
Julian pointed toward the door.
"Leave."
The man left.
Mariana watched the door close.
"That was satisfying."
Julian smiled.
"I've been practicing restraint."
She laughed.
It was the first genuine laugh either of them had shared in days.
But the danger had not passed.
That night, Daniel called.
"I found another document."
Mariana answered.
"What is it?"
"Something your grandmother wrote after she rejected Richard."
"About him?"
"About Evelyn."
Mariana sat up.
"What does it say?"
Daniel hesitated.
"She believed Evelyn had been manipulated."
"By Richard?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because he promised to erase her debts."
Mariana's stomach tightened.
"That doesn't explain why she gave him information about Julian."
Daniel's voice softened.
"No."
"What does it explain?"
"Why Evelyn kept protecting him."
Mariana looked toward the bedroom.
Julian was asleep.
She walked into the hallway.
"Daniel, what are you not telling me?"
A pause.
Then he said, "Your grandmother believed Richard had threatened Evelyn with evidence of a criminal offense."
Mariana stopped walking.
"What offense?"
"I don't know."
"Do you have proof?"
"I have a name."
"Whose?"
"Someone who worked for Richard during that period."
Mariana waited.
Daniel gave her the name.
She recognized it.
It belonged to a former financial officer of Julian's company.
A man who had disappeared immediately after the company recovered.
Mariana felt the pieces lock into place.
Richard had information.
Evelyn had secrets.
Julian's company had been targeted.
And the missing employee might know why.
She returned to the bedroom.
Julian woke as she entered.
"What happened?"
"We need to find someone."
"Who?"
She told him the name.
Julian sat upright.
"I thought he left the country."
"Apparently not."
He looked at her.
"Where is he?"
"Daniel is finding out."
Julian got out of bed.
"What are we waiting for?"
Mariana looked at him.
"Morning."
He stopped.
She smiled.
"Whatever happens next, we're doing it together."
Julian nodded.
For once, he didn't try to take control.
He simply stood beside her.
