Clara read the final entry again.
Tomorrow.
The word had been written beside a date that had not yet arrived.
“What does this mean?”
Marcus leaned over the ledger.
“It means someone expects the transfer to happen tomorrow.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That can't happen.”
Laura looked at him.
“You signed it.”
“I didn't sign a sale.”
“You signed enough.”
Clara closed the book.
“Where are the original documents?”
Daniel pointed toward the filing cabinet.
“Top drawer.”
Clara opened it.
Folders were stacked in careful rows.
Insurance.
Mortgage.
Taxes.
Utilities.
She pulled out the folder marked PROPERTY.
Inside was a copy of their deed.
Another document followed.
Then another.
The final page carried Daniel's signature.
Clara recognized it.
“What is this?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“A loan.”
“No.”
He looked at the paper.
“It was supposed to be.”
Clara read the language.
The document gave the lender an option to acquire the property if Daniel failed to repay the balance by a specified date.
The date was tomorrow.
Her hands became cold.
“You knew.”
“I thought I could pay it.”
“With what?”
“I was waiting for money.”
“From Laura?”
“No.”
“From whom?”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Marcus answered for him.
“Victor Hale.”
Clara stared.
“So the man buying our house was also the man Daniel expected to save him.”
Daniel said nothing.
Laura crossed her arms.
“That was always the arrangement.”
Clara turned toward her.
“What arrangement?”
“Daniel would transfer the property. Victor would clear the debt. Daniel would keep whatever remained.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That wasn't the agreement.”
“Then what was?”
“I was supposed to have more time.”
Laura's expression hardened.
“You ran out of time.”
Ethan appeared again.
“Mom.”
Clara looked at him.
“You should go upstairs.”
“I want to know.”
She hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“All right.”
Ethan entered the room.
Clara placed the ledger on the desk.
“Your father borrowed money using this house.”
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“Why?”
“I made a mistake.”
“A big one.”
“Yes.”
Ethan's voice trembled.
“Did you think we'd lose our home?”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I thought I could fix it.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You always say that.”
The words struck Daniel harder than Clara expected.
Laura moved toward the door.
“I need to go.”
Clara stopped her.
“No.”
Laura turned.
“You promised me the truth.”
“I told you what I know.”
“Not everything.”
Laura hesitated.
Clara held up the key.
“Why did my brother-in-law leave this for me?”
Laura looked at the key.
“Because he knew Daniel had been hiding money.”
“From whom?”
“From his own company.”
Clara's eyes narrowed.
“What company?”
Laura took a breath.
“The company Daniel Reed owned.”
Clara looked at her.
“You mean your husband?”
“Yes.”
Laura's voice became quieter.
“My husband discovered that someone had been moving money through several accounts. He suspected your husband was involved.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“He was wrong.”
“Was he?”
Daniel stopped.
Laura continued.
“He planned to meet Clara.”
Clara felt the air leave her lungs.
“When?”
“The day before he died.”
Daniel looked away.
“You knew.”
Clara stared at him.
“You knew he wanted to tell me.”
Daniel did not respond.
That was enough.
Laura said, “He never made it.”
Clara walked toward Daniel.
“What happened that day?”
“Nothing.”
“You were with him.”
“No.”
“Laura?”
Laura shook her head.
“I wasn't.”
Marcus finally spoke.
“I was.”
Everyone looked at him.
“I met Daniel Reed that afternoon.”
Clara's voice was barely audible.
“What did he say?”
“He told me he was afraid.”
“Of whom?”
“Your husband.”
Daniel stepped backward.
“That isn't true.”
Marcus continued.
“He said he had evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“The money transfers.”
Clara looked at the ledger.
“Then why didn't you take it?”
“Because he told me someone else had already taken the original.”
“Who?”
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
“He didn't know.”
Clara stared at her husband.
Daniel's face was rigid.
“You're lying.”
Marcus shrugged.
“Maybe.”
Clara noticed something then.
Marcus was not behaving like a man who had come to expose Daniel.
He was behaving like a man who wanted something.
“What do you want?”
Marcus looked surprised.
“Nothing.”
“You came to my house. You knew about the ledger. You knew about the loan. You know Laura's husband.”
“What do you want?”
Marcus's silence lasted too long.
Laura answered.
“He wants the ledger.”
Clara turned.
“Why?”
“Because it proves he was involved too.”
Marcus's face hardened.
“That isn't what I said.”
Laura looked at him.
“You don't have to.”
Clara looked between them.
“What did you do?”
Marcus stepped toward the door.
“I made mistakes.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No.”
He looked at Clara.
“But neither is Daniel innocent.”
Then he left.
Clara heard the front door slam.
Ethan looked frightened.
“Mom.”
She turned toward him.
“Go upstairs.”
This time he obeyed.
Daniel remained in the study.
Clara closed the door.
“Now it's just us.”
Daniel sat down.
“I never meant for any of this to happen.”
“That sentence doesn't mean anything anymore.”
He looked at her.
“I loved you.”
Clara stared at him.
“You brought another woman into our home.”
“I know.”
“You lied about your job.”
“I know.”
“You lied about the money.”
“Yes.”
“You put our house at risk.”
“Yes.”
“You involved our son.”
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I was ashamed.”
Clara's voice softened.
“That isn't an excuse.”
“No.”
She sat opposite him.
“Tell me everything.”
Daniel looked at the ledger.
“I took money from the company because I thought I could replace it.”
“How?”
“Investments.”
“Did you lose it?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“About one hundred eighty thousand.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“And the rest?”
“I borrowed.”
“From Laura?”
“Some.”
“From Victor?”
“Yes.”
“Why would Victor lend you money?”
Daniel looked down.
“He wanted the house.”
Clara nodded slowly.
At last, the pieces were forming a shape.
But one piece still refused to fit.
“Why did Laura need the key?”
Daniel looked up.
“I don't know.”
Clara knew he was lying.
She stood.
“I'll find out.”
Daniel caught her hand.
“Clara.”
She pulled away.
“I came home carrying food for you.”
His eyes closed.
“I know.”
“I thought I was walking back into my family.”
Daniel whispered, “You are.”
“No.”
She looked toward the staircase.
“My son is still my family.”
Then she looked at him.
“I don't know what you are yet.”
She left the room.
Upstairs, Ethan was standing beside the bedroom window.
Clara approached him.
“What is it?”
He pointed outside.
A black sedan had stopped across the street.
A man was sitting inside.
Clara recognized the silver hair.
Victor Hale.
He was watching the house.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
A moment later, he looked directly at Clara.
He smiled.
And drove away.
