PART 5 – Laura Finally Opened the Box, and Clara Learned Why a Spare Key Had Been Used Inside Her House Before She Ever Returned

Laura stood on the sidewalk with the black box closed in both hands. Marcus remained several feet away, watching the house as if he expected someone else to appear. Clara stepped outside, followed by Daniel, who looked as though he wanted to stop the conversation before it began.

“You said you would tell me the truth,” Clara said.

Laura nodded.

“I will.”

“Then start with the key.”

Laura looked down at the box.

“This key belonged to someone who had access to your house long before I did.”

Clara's eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

“Daniel's brother.”

Clara glanced at her husband.

“My brother gave it to me years ago,” Daniel said.

“He gave it to Laura,” Clara replied.

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't know that.”

Laura gave a tired laugh.

“You didn't know nearly as much as you think you did.”

Clara stepped closer.

“What was your relationship with my brother-in-law?”

Laura hesitated.

“None.”

“Then why did he give you his key?”

“He didn't.”

Laura opened the box.

Inside was a folded note beneath the key.

She handed it to Clara.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Clara read the first line twice.

If anything happens to me, give this to Clara.

Her stomach tightened.

“Who wrote this?”

Laura looked at Daniel.

“Your brother-in-law.”

Clara unfolded the rest.

The note was short. It said he had discovered something about Daniel's finances and had become concerned that someone was using the family home for purposes Clara did not know about. He had intended to speak with her after she returned from caring for her mother.

But he never had the chance.

Clara looked up.

“He died?”

Laura nodded.

“Three months ago.”

Daniel said, “He had a heart attack.”

Clara turned toward him.

“You told me he moved overseas.”

Daniel looked away.

“I didn't know how to explain it.”

“You lied about your own brother.”

Daniel said nothing.

Laura's voice softened.

“He wasn't the man in my photograph.”

Clara looked at her sharply.

“Then who was?”

“My husband.”

“Daniel.”

“Yes.”

Clara's mind returned to the photograph in the study. Laura beside a silver-haired man. The words on the back.

Before Daniel.

Laura noticed the confusion.

“My husband was named Daniel Reed.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“He owned a small property company.”

Clara looked at him.

“And what does that have to do with my husband?”

Marcus answered carefully.

“Your husband worked with him.”

Daniel interrupted.

“As a consultant.”

Laura shook her head.

“As someone who handled his private accounts.”

Clara turned toward Daniel.

“Did you?”

Daniel's shoulders dropped.

“Yes.”

“How much money was involved?”

“A lot.”

“Give me a number.”

Daniel looked at the ground.

“About three hundred thousand.”

Clara stared at him.

The number seemed absurdly large.

She thought of the thirty-five thousand Laura had transferred to him. The forty thousand he had admitted taking. The one hundred twenty thousand loan secured against the house.

None of it fit.

Unless the missing money was much larger.

“Where did the rest go?”

Daniel said nothing.

Laura answered.

“That's what everyone has been trying to find out.”

Clara looked at Marcus.

“You said Laura was trying to get access to something.”

“I said she was looking for the money.”

“And did she find it?”

“No.”

Clara turned back to Laura.

“Then why did you come here?”

Laura looked toward the house.

“Because I believed the answer was inside.”

Clara remembered the locked study drawer.

The photographs.

The spare key.

“What were you looking for?”

“A ledger.”

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

“No.”

Laura faced him.

“You knew about it.”

“I knew nothing.”

“You knew enough to be afraid.”

Marcus said, “The ledger records every transfer.”

Clara's pulse quickened.

“Where is it?”

Laura looked at Daniel.

“He hid it.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't.”

“Then where is it?”

He did not answer.

Clara walked back into the house.

Neither Laura nor Marcus followed immediately.

She entered the study and opened the locked drawer again.

The passport.

The photographs.

The documents.

Nothing resembling a ledger.

Then she noticed the bottom of the drawer.

It sat slightly higher than the others.

She ran her fingertips along the edge.

Daniel appeared behind her.

“Clara.”

She pulled.

The false bottom lifted.

Beneath it was a thin black notebook.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Laura came into the room.

“You knew.”

Clara picked up the notebook.

She opened it.

Rows of dates and amounts filled the pages.

Some were marked with initials.

Others had account numbers.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Daniel.

Another appeared beside it.

Laura.

Clara turned several pages.

The transfers began shortly before she left for her mother's.

Then came payments to a company she did not recognize.

Finally, there was an entry dated five days before her return.

The amount was enormous.

Clara read it twice.

“Where did this go?”

Daniel whispered, “I don't know.”

Laura stared at the page.

Marcus leaned over Clara's shoulder.

“That company belongs to someone named Victor Hale.”

Clara looked up.

“Who is Victor Hale?”

Marcus's expression changed.

“He's the man who was supposed to buy your house.”

Clara felt the room go silent.

“Our house isn't for sale.”

Laura said quietly, “It was.”

Clara turned to Daniel.

“You listed our house?”

“No.”

“You used it as collateral.”

“Yes.”

“You signed papers connected to a sale.”

“I didn't know.”

“That isn't possible.”

Daniel's face crumpled.

“I thought it was a refinancing agreement.”

Laura shook her head.

“You signed a transfer option.”

Clara looked at the notebook again.

The entry was dated two weeks after she left.

She understood something then.

The four months away had not simply given Daniel time to betray her.

They had given other people time to rearrange her life without her knowing.

She closed the ledger.

“What happens if this gets out?”

Marcus answered.

“Daniel could face criminal charges.”

Ethan appeared in the doorway.

He had heard enough.

“Dad?”

Daniel looked at him.

Ethan's face was pale.

“Is our house going to be taken?”

Daniel couldn't answer.

Clara stepped toward her son.

“No one is taking anything tonight.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Tonight may be the least of your problems.”

Clara looked at him.

“Why?”

He pointed toward the notebook.

“Because those last entries aren't transactions.”

Clara looked down.

Beside the final payment was a single handwritten phrase.

Transfer completed.

She turned the page.

Nothing followed.

Then she noticed the date.

It was tomorrow.
