PART 6 – The Missing Assistant Knew the Secret of the Third Identity, but Her Message Suggested Someone Else Had Been Giving Orders

Mara Vale was found two days later in a motel outside Milwaukee.

She had checked in under her mother's maiden name and paid cash.

When federal agents brought her into the interview room, she looked exhausted rather than frightened. Her hair was pulled into a loose knot, and she kept rubbing the edge of her sleeve between her thumb and forefinger.

Detective Vance placed a photograph of Julian on the table.

Mara looked at it.

Then she looked at me.

“I wondered when you'd find her,” she said.

“Find who?”

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she asked, “Which one did you think was your husband?”

I stared at her.

“Julian.”

She gave a sad little smile.

“That wasn't the question.”

Detective Vance leaned forward.

“Mara, we need you to explain what happened.”

She looked at the recording device.

“Is this protected?”

“You're being offered cooperation.”

“I want immunity.”

“That isn't my decision.”

“Then I'm not talking.”

Detective Vance slid another document across the table.

It was a photograph of a bank transfer.

Mara's name appeared beside it.

She closed her eyes.

“I didn't steal anything.”

“We know.”

“I moved money because I was told to.”

“By whom?”

She looked directly at me.

“By Julian.”

I felt nothing.

Not surprise.

Not anger.

Only exhaustion.

Then Mara added, “Both of them.”

The room changed.

She explained that Julian and Nicolai had been working together for years.

At first, their arrangement had been simple.

They used their identical appearance to cover business meetings and personal movements.

But the money changed things.

Julian discovered that the firm could hide enormous losses through layered investment vehicles.

Nicolai handled physical transfers.

Mara handled paperwork.

Eventually, the brothers stopped trusting each other.

Nicolai wanted out.

Julian didn't.

“He was going to confess,” Mara said.

“When?”

“The night of the crash.”

“Why?”

“Because he thought Julian had gone too far.”

I asked her what “too far” meant.

She looked down.

“He told me Julian had started talking about killing people.”

My hands tightened.

“Me?”

Mara nodded.

“He said you were becoming a problem.”

I remembered the sedative.

The photographs.

The insurance policies.

The burner phone.

Mara continued.

“Nicolai didn't want you dead.”

“Then why did he participate?”

“Because he was afraid of Julian.”

That explanation made sense in a way I hated.

Two brothers had built something together.

Then one of them became more ruthless.

The other became trapped inside the machinery they had created.

Detective Vance asked, “Who is M?”

Mara's face changed.

She looked toward the door.

Then at me.

“I never met him.”

“But you know who he is.”

“I know the name.”

“What name?”

“Martin Vale.”

My breath caught.

“Your brother?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“That's my father's name.”

Detective Vance frowned.

“Your father is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then who is Martin Vale?”

Mara stared at the table.

“My father had another identity.”

The room fell silent.

She explained that her father had worked in financial fraud investigations decades earlier. He had disappeared after being accused of corruption. Officially, he died overseas.

But Mara had discovered years later that he had been living under another name.

He had connections inside private banking networks.

He knew how to move money without leaving obvious trails.

And, according to Mara, Julian had been communicating with him.

“But he's dead,” I said.

“Officially.”

Detective Vance asked, “When was your last contact?”

“Six months ago.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“What did he want?”

Mara looked at me.

“You.”

The word seemed to echo.

“Why?”

“Because Julian believed you knew something.”

“I didn't.”

“I know.”

She reached into her bag and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

“It was sent to me after Nicolai died.”

I unfolded it.

There were three photographs.

One showed me leaving work.

One showed Julian entering the company.

The third showed a man standing outside our building.

His face was partly hidden beneath a cap.

On the bottom was a sentence.

SHE HAS THE ORIGINAL.

I looked at Detective Vance.

“Original what?”

Mara shook her head.

“I don't know.”

I thought about everything from the old apartment.

Marriage certificate.

Wedding photographs.

Financial statements.

Letters.

Nothing stood out.

Then I remembered the watch.

The vintage wristwatch from the morgue.

Julian's anniversary gift.

The watch had been recovered from the crash.

Except Julian had worn it the night before.

I had seen it.

That meant someone had removed it from our apartment.

Someone had wanted the watch in the wreck.

Detective Vance immediately requested the evidence.

The watch arrived that afternoon.

A forensic technician examined it.

The back panel opened.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

I stared at it.

“I've never seen that before.”

Detective Vance looked at Mara.

Mara whispered, “Neither have I.”

The card contained a single encrypted file.

The investigators spent hours trying to open it.

When they finally succeeded, the first document appeared.

It was dated eleven years earlier.

The title read:

VANCE FAMILY TRUST — ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY STRUCTURE.

I read the first page.

My name appeared at the bottom.

I stopped breathing.

Julian had never mentioned a family trust.

Detective Vance continued reading.

The trust had been established before Julian and I met.

It contained assets worth more than fifty million dollars.

But the money wasn't Julian's.

It belonged to me.

I stared at the screen.

“That can't be right.”

Detective Vance looked at me.

“It is.”

The next page contained a clause.

If Evelyn Vance died without children, the assets would transfer to a designated beneficiary.

The beneficiary was Julian Vance.

Then another name appeared beneath his.

Nicolai Vance.

And beneath that:

Mara Vale.

I felt sick.

The scheme wasn't simply about stealing thirty million dollars.

It was about gaining control of an inheritance I had never known existed.

Mara looked at me.

“That's why they needed you alive until the paperwork was complete.”

I stared at the screen.

Then Detective Vance noticed something I hadn't.

A final line had been added recently.

The beneficiary designation had changed.

Someone had replaced all three names.

The new beneficiary was:

Martin Vale.
