PART 2 – A Hidden Phone Showed Me Someone Had Been Watching My Life From Inside Our Home While My Husband Pretended Nothing Was Wrong

I waited until Julian left for the office.

He kissed my forehead before going.

The gesture should have comforted me. Instead, I stood at the door after it closed and listened to his footsteps disappear down the hallway.

Then I locked every bolt.

I began searching.

I opened drawers, emptied coat pockets, checked the medicine cabinet, looked beneath furniture, and searched places I hadn't touched in years. I wasn't sure what I expected to find. A key, perhaps. A weapon. Some explanation that would turn the previous night into an elaborate mistake.

I found none of those.

Instead, inside the pocket of the gray hoodie Julian had worn to the morgue, my fingers touched something hard.

I pulled out a small black phone.

It was cheap, almost disposable.

There was no password.

The gallery opened immediately.

The first photograph showed me leaving a coffee shop on Michigan Avenue.

The next showed me buying groceries.

Then one of me walking into my office building.

I kept scrolling.

The photographs became closer.

More intimate.

I was sitting at my desk.

Pouring water in the kitchen.

Reading on the sofa.

Walking out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around me.

Then I saw myself asleep.

The picture had been taken from inside our bedroom.

My stomach turned.

There were hundreds of photographs.

Someone had been documenting my life.

Not from a distance.

From inside my home.

I kept scrolling until I reached the final video.

The timestamp was from the previous night.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Then I pressed play.

The bedroom appeared.

Our bedroom.

I could see myself sleeping beneath the comforter.

Julian stood beside the bed.

Another man stood across from him.

At first I thought the image was distorted.

Then the stranger turned toward the camera.

He had Julian's face.

The same dark hair.

The same height.

The same shoulders.

The same eyes.

I dropped the phone onto the floor.

The video continued playing.

“It's the last exchange,” the stranger said.

Julian handed him a folded stack of clothing.

“You're sure she won't wake up?”

The other man glanced toward me.

“You gave her enough sedative in her wine.”

I covered my mouth.

Julian looked down at the sleeping woman in the bed.

Me.

Then he turned toward his double.

“Tomorrow, you become Julian Vance.”

The screen went black.

At that exact moment, the doorbell chimed.

My security app flashed across the phone screen.

User 3 authenticated.

The front door opened.

I snatched the burner phone from the floor and shoved it beneath my sweater.

Julian stepped inside.

Two hours early.

“The police are reviewing some company records,” he said casually. “I thought I'd come home.”

His eyes moved across the apartment.

Then to me.

Then briefly to the pocket where I had hidden the phone.

My heartbeat became so loud I could barely hear him.

“I wasn't expecting you.”

“I know.”

He smiled.

He walked toward the kitchen.

I watched his hands.

His left hand reached for the security panel.

The same hand that had held the elevator door that morning.

“Something wrong?” he asked.

“No.”

“You look pale.”

“Long night.”

“So I've heard.”

The words were harmless.

His expression wasn't.

My phone buzzed.

Detective Vance.

I answered immediately.

“Mrs. Vance, I need you and your husband at the precinct.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

Julian looked at me.

I swallowed.

“It's the police.”

His smile didn't change.

“Of course.”

At the station, Detective Vance placed a traffic-camera photograph on the desk.

The image showed the driver of our SUV before the crash.

The face was Julian's.

There was no ambiguity.

Then he placed a second photograph beside it.

An auto-parts store.

A man with Julian's face buying brake fluid and heavy industrial tools several hours before the collision.

Detective Vance folded his arms.

“Mr. Vance, I need to ask you something directly.”

Julian's fingers tightened around the paper coffee cup in his hand.

“Do you have an identical twin?”

The cup collapsed slightly.

I looked at my husband.

He didn't look at me.

Finally, he said one word.

“Nicolai.”

I felt as though someone had struck me.

“Nicolai who?”

“My brother.”

“You have a brother?”

He closed his eyes.

I couldn't speak.

Nine years of marriage.

Nine years of family dinners, holidays, anniversaries, vacations, arguments, reconciliations, illnesses, birthdays.

Never once had I heard the name Nicolai.

I reached beneath my sweater.

I placed the burner phone on Detective Vance's desk.

“His brother was inside our home.”

Detective Vance watched the video.

Julian's face drained of color.

When the recording ended, the detective leaned toward him.

“Why was your brother impersonating you?”

Julian stared at the floor.

Then he laughed.

It was a quiet sound.

Wrong somehow.

I stepped backward.

“Julian?”

He raised his eyes.

“That isn't my name.”

My chest tightened.

“My name is Nicolai.”

For a second, I couldn't move.

Then I slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room.

“Did you sleep beside me last night?”

“Yes.”

My voice broke.

“And the other times?”

He didn't answer.

That silence told me enough.

Financial investigators were already examining Julian's investment firm. Before the afternoon ended, they uncovered millions of dollars that had vanished from an $80 million private-equity fund.

More than thirty million had been routed through offshore accounts.

The arrangement explained why two identical men had been useful.

One could attend a dinner while the other handled a transaction.

One could appear at work while the other crossed a border.

One could sleep beside me while the other created an alibi somewhere else.

I had unknowingly been part of the disguise.

But there was still one question nobody could answer.

If the man beside me wasn't Julian—

who was lying dead in the morgue?
