PART 24 – The Man Who Wore David’s Face

Nobody spoke.

The man stood in the doorway with David's face, David's posture, even the same dark coat David had worn to Tyler's promotion dinner.

But the scar beneath his eye gave him away.

Tyler stared.

“You're not my uncle.”

The man smiled.

“I was wondering when you'd notice.”

Mercer raised his weapon.

The man didn't flinch.

“Don't.”

Reyes stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The stranger looked at him.

“You've been asking the wrong question for six years.”

“What question should I ask?”

“Who was David working for?”

Tyler's expression hardened.

“He wasn't.”

The man laughed.

“You still believe that?”

I looked at him.

“You killed him.”

“No.”

“Then where is he?”

“Dead.”

“Who killed him?”

The stranger's smile disappeared.

“Someone who was tired of cleaning up his mistakes.”

Claire moved beside me.

“You're the man who attacked Evan.”

He looked at her.

“Evan attacked first.”

“Why?”

“Because he stole what wasn't his.”

“The memory card?”

“The evidence.”

Mercer stepped forward.

“What is your name?”

The stranger hesitated.

Then said:

“Michael.”

I stared.

The name meant nothing.

But Claire reacted.

She knew it.

“You.”

Michael smiled.

“You remember.”

Claire's face had gone white.

“Michael Voss.”

Reyes looked at her.

“Who is he?”

Claire whispered, “David's partner.”

Tyler frowned.

“My uncle never had a partner.”

“He did,” Claire said.

“Before you were born.”

Michael's expression remained calm.

“He was my partner for nineteen years.”

“What did you do?”

“Fire investigations.”

Mercer studied him.

“Then why impersonate David?”

“Because people see what they expect.”

He looked at me.

“And Amanda expected David.”

I felt sick.

“How long have you been doing this?”

“Long enough.”

“Why target me?”

“Because Daniel chose you.”

“Chosen for what?”

Michael glanced at the computer.

“For the evidence.”

I shook my head.

“You could have taken it years ago.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel hid it in a way only you could unlock.”

I looked at the memory card.

“What does that mean?”

Michael smiled.

“The final file isn't complete.”

Mercer looked at the screen.

“What?”

Michael pointed.

“Look at the metadata.”

Mercer checked.

His expression changed.

“The video was modified.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Michael nodded.

“Exactly.”

I stared at him.

“Someone added the final section.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Michael looked directly at me.

“You.”

I shook my head.

“I didn't.”

“Not knowingly.”

The room fell silent.

Michael continued.

“Daniel recorded the original file six years ago. But he knew you would eventually need a way to prove what happened.”

He pointed at the computer.

“The final section was programmed to unlock when your phone received the right message.”

Mercer looked at the phone.

The message that had told me to open the second file.

My name.

Amanda_Final.

“You triggered it,” Mercer said.

Michael nodded.

“Because you came back to the house.”

Claire whispered, “Daniel built a dead man's switch.”

Michael smiled.

“Exactly.”

Reyes stared at him.

“Then why threaten Tyler?”

“Because fear makes people predictable.”

Tyler looked at me.

“He wanted her to bring the card.”

“Yes.”

“And if she didn't?”

Michael's face hardened.

“You know the answer.”

Tyler tried to stand.

I pushed him back down.

“Don't.”

Michael watched us.

“You see?”

He smiled.

“That's why Daniel chose her.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because Tyler protects you.”

“And?”

“You protect everyone.”

The words sounded almost like praise.

They weren't.

They were a warning.

Mercer quietly moved toward the computer.

Michael noticed.

“Don't.”

Mercer stopped.

“Why?”

“Because the file will erase itself.”

Mercer froze.

I looked at him.

“Can you stop it?”

“Maybe.”

Michael laughed.

“Maybe isn't enough.”

Reyes moved closer.

“You're surrounded.”

Michael looked toward the hallway.

“Are you?”

The emergency lights flickered.

Then every phone in the room buzzed at once.

A message appeared on each screen.

YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES.

Mercer looked at Reyes.

“Someone else has access.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Michael didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Claire.

“You know.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“No.”

“You know exactly who.”

“Don't.”

“Tell them.”

She shook her head.

Michael smiled.

“The person behind all of this isn't in the hospital.”

I looked at him.

“Then where?”

“At the station.”

My heart stopped.

The fire station.

The place where the birthday party had started.

The place where Tyler's cake was still sitting.

The place where everyone had gathered before the warehouse call.

“The station?”

Michael nodded.

“Someone has been there all night.”

Reyes reached for his radio.

No response.

Mercer tried his.

Nothing.

Michael smiled.

“The communications system was disabled twenty minutes ago.”

Tyler looked at him.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

Michael's expression changed.

“I warned them.”

“Who?”

“The people who wanted you dead.”

I stared.

“You're not the one behind this.”

He shook his head.

“I never was.”

“Then why are you here?”

“To stop the person who is.”

Silence.

Claire stepped forward.

“Michael.”

He looked at her.

“You can't fix what you helped create.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I owe Frank.”

The room became still.

Michael looked at me.

“Frank discovered the payments.”

He looked at Reyes.

“Daniel discovered the altered reports.”

Then at Tyler.

“Your father discovered the person behind them.”

Finally, he looked at the memory card.

“And Amanda discovered the one thing they never accounted for.”

I swallowed.

“What?”

“The evidence was never destroyed.”

Michael pointed toward the computer.

“It was copied.”

Mercer stared at the screen.

A new folder had appeared.

Not on the computer.

On his phone.

He opened it.

Thousands of documents.

Payment records.

Fire reports.

Photographs.

Names.

Dates.

Everything.

But one file was locked.

Filename:

FINAL_AUTHORIZATION.

Mercer tried to open it.

Password required.

Michael looked at me.

“Daniel left that for you.”

I stared at the screen.

“How would I know the password?”

Michael smiled.

“You already do.”

I thought.

The blue room.

The old house.

The phrase from the photograph.

Home is wherever you are.

I typed it.

The file opened.

A single document appeared.

The final authorization.

Signed six years ago.

The signature belonged to one person.

Not David.

Not Harris.

Not Captain Lewis.

Not Reyes.

I stared at the name.

My heart stopped.

Tyler looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“No.”

Claire began crying.

Reyes whispered the name.

Mercer stepped backward.

Because the signature belonged to someone who had been dead for eight years.

Tyler's mother.

But beneath her signature was another line.

AUTHORIZED BY:

And that name was still alive.

I looked at the screen.

Then toward Michael.

“Who is it?”

He didn't answer.

He simply looked at the hospital door.

Someone was approaching.

Slow footsteps.

A familiar voice came from the corridor.

“Amanda?”

Tyler's face went white.

It was the voice of Captain Reyes.

But Reyes was standing beside us.

The voice came again.

“Open the door.”

Michael whispered:

“That's him.”

Reyes stared at the door.

“No.”

The handle began to turn.

And for the first time, Captain Reyes looked genuinely afraid.
