PART 3 – At Twelve Six in the Morning, I Called the One Person Cole Believed I Had No Reason to Contact Anymore

By midnight, the apartment had finally gone quiet.

Not peaceful.

Quiet.

There was a difference, and I had learned it the hard way.

Noah had stopped fussing.

Lily was asleep, though every so often she shifted and made a small sound that brought me to my feet.

I moved between their cribs without turning on the overhead light.

The Christmas lights along the nursery wall cast a faint glow over the blankets.

I'd imagined this room full of happy noise.

I hadn't imagined standing in it alone, wondering whether my husband had ever intended to be the father he claimed he wanted to become.

I checked the babies one more time.

Then I went to the kitchen.

The clock read 12:06 a.m.

My phone lay beside the blue jewelry box.

I opened my contacts.

Daniel Harris.

I had saved his number years earlier, after my grandmother introduced us.

He was the attorney responsible for overseeing the trust.

He had explained the documents to me before my wedding, then reviewed the arrangement with me again after my grandmother died.

He was patient without being sentimental.

He didn't treat questions as signs of ignorance.

And he had never made me feel foolish for wanting to understand what belonged to me.

I stared at his name.

For months, I'd told myself there was no reason to call him.

Everything was fine.

The trust was secure.

My marriage was difficult sometimes, but every marriage had its problems.

There was always another excuse.

Now I had a photograph, a receipt, and bruises on my wrist.

I pressed the call button.

The phone rang.

I nearly ended the call before he answered.

Then I heard his voice.

"Lauren?"

I tried to speak.

Nothing came out.

My throat felt tight, and my eyes burned.

He waited.

"Are you all right?"

That was all it took.

I looked toward the nursery door.

Then I pulled my sleeve back and examined the marks on my wrist.

"No," I said.

There was a pause.

I could hear him moving at the other end, as if he had sat up or stepped away from whatever he'd been doing.

"Tell me what happened."

I wanted to explain everything at once.

I wanted to tell him about Christmas Eve, about Cole leaving, about Sierra, about the hotel photograph and the necklace.

I wanted to describe the way Cole's fingers had closed around my wrist two nights earlier.

I wanted to explain how I had spent so long doubting myself that even undeniable evidence had taken several minutes to feel real.

Instead, I took a breath.

"Mr. Harris, I need you to activate the emergency clause."

The silence that followed felt different from the pauses I'd grown used to with Cole.

Daniel wasn't ignoring me.

He was considering the weight of what I'd asked.

When he finally spoke, his voice had become careful.

"Lauren, are you certain that's what you want?"

I looked at the necklace box.

Then I glanced at the photograph on my screen.

Cole's arm was still around Sierra.

His wedding ring was still visible.

The bruises on my wrist were beginning to fade, but they hadn't disappeared.

I thought about the way he'd looked at me when he left that evening.

The warning he'd given me.

The assumption that I would remain where he'd left me, doing whatever was necessary to keep the household running until he decided to return.

I thought about my grandmother sitting across from me at the attorney's office.

Necessary is a word people use when they want to avoid thinking about what could happen.

I understood her better now.

"Yes," I told Daniel. "I'm sure."

He released a slow breath.

"Then listen closely. I need you to understand what comes next."

I held the phone more tightly.

For the first time that night, I wasn't trying to persuade someone to believe me.

I was asking for help, and someone had answered.
